If I had to choose a pull quote for this entry it would be the bit about, "Our vocabulary is impoverished when it comes to leadership and followership," so I agree that a lot of nuance is lost in the discussion. I also feel that a lost of nuance about leadership that should be appreciated is diminished if people who are simply effective human beings are consistently called leaders, or offered leadership positions. Surely there is more to being a leader than just being an effective person.Eileen Canhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13883108391253498266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665465371425110784.post-88865803565965138822011-04-25T21:20:31.555-04:002011-04-25T21:20:31.555-04:00Hmmm, at the risk of being labeled as one of those...Hmmm, at the risk of being labeled as one of those "cheery voices"...

The post, and many discussions of leadership, assume there are 2 kinds of people in the world, leaders and followers. I think that'a fundamental flaw (as are a lot of binary categorizations). We are, most of us, by turns leaders and followers, as circumstances and our own passions require us to be.

And I can cite situations in which you have led, or are leading. The way I had started explaining it to people was that, "I don't work for/in a library; I do library-type tasks for an organization." I think Mary Ellen Bates was the one who originally pointed out that Librarian, and a few other titles such as Gardener, is a job once defined by its physical location. If this is the case, perhaps there is no need for me to qualify "Librarian" with "Embedded" because so many of us now do library-type tasks in all sorts of settings. Or, perhaps, the term is needed while we are in a transition of consciousness about this issue.Eileen Canhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14240334759526549183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665465371425110784.post-2453859795917230132008-09-23T17:16:00.000-04:002008-09-23T17:16:00.000-04:00I might pose another question:Is someone who never...I might pose another question:

Is someone who never works in a library during their workweek a librarian at all? Consider this: You have two different people. One works in the corporate library 10 hours per week and works in the office area 30 hours. You have a second person who works in the office area using the same skills for their entire 40 hours. What is the difference between them? Looking at job descriptions it seems to be a job title. The first might have a library-related job title while the second might be called a business analyst. What is the difference?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665465371425110784.post-91799902955612346232008-09-17T10:53:00.000-04:002008-09-17T10:53:00.000-04:00Although my perception is that it is only a matter...Although my perception is that it is only a matter of semantics, "embedded" librarian sounds better to me than "special" librarian and more adequately describes our types of positions. My job title is librarian/historian and I do perform as such in our multi-national, non-profit but I also am a fully-functioning member of our Marketing Dept. with related responsibilities in product development and product project management.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1665465371425110784.post-43870606416383271102008-09-08T11:27:00.000-04:002008-09-08T11:27:00.000-04:00Thanks, Steve...and yes, I am still working out th...Thanks, Steve...and yes, I am still working out the details of how to reply to comments on my own blog!

I would say that, at a minimum, the "Nothing New" concept inspired my Task Mastery 101 post this week. I also feel I get some general benefits out of being in library school classes while working as a librarian (maybe I will do a post about that one of these days). But to address your specific point, you have inspired me to note in my school notebook margins not only what I notice about the two classes that I can blog about, but also some immediate application of those points to my work here.
